In the classical Indian tradition, the four European elements – earth, air, fire and water – are supplemented by a fifth: space or ether. The ancient Chinese elements are also five: water, fire, earth, metal and wood. These, in sum, are the seven elements of the seven poems which form the basis of this song cycle. - Vikram Seth

Seven Elements was commissioned jointly by the Salisbury, Chelsea and Lichfield Festivals. The first performances were given by James Gilchrist (tenor) and Rustem Hayroudinoff (piano) at Wilton Church, 1 June; St Luke’s, Chelsea, 16 June; and Lichfield Cathedral, 15 July 2009. The first performance of the version for voice and string quartet was given by James Gilchrist and the Allegri String Quartet at St Myllin’s Church, Llanfyllin, 2 July 2010.

Also available for High Voice and String Quartet (EP73077a)

COMBINED VERSION: The two versions – Piano and String Quartet – may be combined, in which case the performers should feel free to edit the parts to produce an effective balance of weight and colour
