Dallas Symphony to Perform Amram's PARTNERS

April 9 and 10 at the Meyerson Symphony Center, the Dallas Symphony Orchestra will present a live performance of David Amram's Partners: A Double Concerto for violin, cello and orchestra.

Composed for soloists Maria Schleuning and Jolyon Pegis, each movement of Partners is dedicated to another great musical pair: Woody Guthrie and Pete Seeger in the first movement, Lester Young and Billie Holiday in the second, and in the final movement, Machito Grillo and Celia Cruz.

Amram, a key figure linking the worlds of jazz, folk and classical music with the worlds of beat poetry and film, knew all of the musical giants portrayed in the piece, and celebrated his 90th birthday in November of last year.

Says Amram, in his program note for the piece:

These six pioneers are honored in this piece for the partnerships they formed, which continue to show us how the timeless genres of music from the past enriches the cultures of the whole world today.

All six of them always took the time to be gracious and supportive to young upcoming musicians and composers who hoped to be able to do something in music. In the '50s, when I came to NYC, I was one of those young people whom they took the time to mentor and encourage.

Today, this makes me see how lucky I was to know these six artists who contributed so much to today's renewed appreciation of all music from the heart which was built to last.

The spirit of their partnerships were what inspired me to write this piece as a double concerto for violin and cello. The music which they created doesn't need any embellishment. Rather than orchestrating or arranging what these three groups of partners already did so well, I composed music inspired by the spirit of their collaborations.

This performance will mark the first time that the Dallas Symphony has taken up the work, playing under the baton of Katharina Wincor. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, masks will be mandatory for musicians, staff and patrons, and seating will be strictly limited. Visit for tickets and further information
