Peters Welcomes Composer Sky Macklay
Edition Peters is honored and delighted to add the name of distinguished American composer, performer and installation artist Sky Macklay to our roster of published composers.
Peters' relationship with Macklay begins immediately with the issue of five pieces from her catalogue of works: Density Dancity
for tenor saxophone and piano, the orchestral piece Dissolving Bands
for violin and piano, Glossolalia
for soprano and piano, and her celebrated string quartet, Many Many Cadences
Says Macklay of the new agreement:
When I first began identifying as a composer and discovering 20th century music in college, my go-to place was the bottom shelf of the library stacks where I found beautiful oversize scores with covers marked 'CAGE,' 'CRUMB,' and 'COWELL' in that signature all-caps Peters font. Signing with Peters and joining their big-fonted-ranks is truly a dream come true. It is incredibly gratifying that Peters is both championing my pieces that already exist and putting faith in my future output.
Macklay's music has been performed by Ensemble Dal Niente, the Da Capo Chamber Players, ICE, Mivos Quartet, the New York Virtuoso Singers, Le Nouvel Ensemble Moderne, Splinter Reeds, and Wet Ink Ensemble.
She has received both the Leo Kaplan award (ASCAP Morton Gould Young Composer Awards) and the Ruth Anderson Prize from the International Alliance for Women in Music, and Many Many Cadences both won an ASCAP award and appeared on the Spektral Quartet’s Grammy-nominated album Serious Business.
An alumna of Luther College and the University of Memphis, Macklay completed her studies at Columbia University, where her teachers included Georg Friedrich Haas, Fred Lerdahl, and George Lewis. She is now Assistant Professor of Music at Valparaiso University.
