Theme and 13 Nocturnal variations for solo piano
Dedicated to Ian Ritchie
Commissioned by the City of London Festival
First performed on the 23rd of June 2008, by Samuel West - Actor and David Owen Norris - Piano. It was performed on an 1817 Broadwood piano with a split right pedal.
"The piece was first performed using an 1817 Broadwood piano with a split right pedal. This version is for modern piano solo with normal pedal markings. The work takes the form of an anxiety dream. Byron, travelling in the Alps, is haunted by his guilt and anger after his scandalous departure from England. The immense landscapes only seem to exacerbate his feelings. The voices that torment him are condemnatory, fatalistic and unforgiving.
The music takes the form of a Theme and 13 variations. The theme is the composer’s song She Walks in Beauty as the Night. It is in 3 movements with short pauses between variations 3 and 4, and 8 and 9." -- Judith Bingham
