George Crumb: Metamorphoses, Book I

World Premiere
On May 7th the National Gallery of Art in Washington D.C. will host pianist, Margaret Len Tan, and the world premiere of the first installment of George Crumb’s Metamorphoses. The piece which is written for Tan will be Crumb’s first piano cycle since Makrokosmos. Metamorphoses is based on ten paintings and is a tribute to Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition. In addition to piano the work is scored for toy piano and percussion instruments. The program will also include pieces by Henry Cowell and John Cage’s The Perilous Night for prepared piano.
