Beamish City Stanzas World Premiere

St. Paul Chamber Orchestra performs World Premiere
The world premiere of Sally Beamish’s City Stanzas will occur today, Friday January 20, 2017. Two more sold out performances are scheduled for Saturday and Sunday. City Stanzas is the second piece to come out of Jonathon Biss’ commissioning project Beethoven/5. The objective of Beethoven/5 is creating new and modern pieces for the piano repertoire while incorporating inspiration from the Beethoven piano concertos. Five composers have been chosen to write for the project with Timo Andres’ The Blind Banister being the first to premiere. The three other composers to write for the project are Salvatore Sciarrino, Caroline Shaw and Brett Dean.

City Stanzas depicts city street scenes while using either groups of notes or rhythmic figures from Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 1 as inspiration.
The program’s focal piece will be Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 1 with Ms. Beamish’s piece occurring right before it. Ravel’s Le tombeau de Couperin will open the concert.

Visit the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra website for more information on the ticket waiting list as well as the
