It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Leslie Bassett. Bassett passed away on February 4th in a continuing care facility in Oakwood, GA. Bassett was born in Hanford, CA on January 22, 1923. He studied trombone and piano as a youth and served in the 13th Armored Division Band during World War II. He taught at the University of Michigan from 1952-1992 where Russell Peck, Evan Chambers, and Gabriela Lena Frank were among the students that he taught. His Variations for Orchestra earned him a Pulitzer Prize for Music in 1966. He studied composition with Ross Lee Finney and also studied electronic music with Mario Davidovsky. He is survived by his wife Anita and daughter Wendy Bassett Baker. The Detroit Free Press obituary is provided below.
