Cage And Brown String Quartets

New York Times Reviews JACK Quartet performance
This past Friday, November 20th, the JACK Quartet performed at Roulette in Brooklyn, New York. The concert was sponsored by the American Music Project. The New York Times (November 23, 2015, article provided at the end) reviewed the performance which included the world premiere of Geoffrey Gordon’s Clarinet Quintet. At the nexus of the program, John Cage's String Quartet in Four Parts (1950) received praise for the free and spacious way the quartet was able to perform. Later in the evening, Earle Brown's String Quartet (1965) was performed in which the players utilized an arsenal of sounds and demonstrated control over an extremely dense and suspenseful piece.
The two pieces are highlighted by American Music Project series whose mission is to bolster programs with American classical music.
