The C.F. Peters rental department is offering a special sale on selected works by Alan Hovhaness, one of the most innovative American composers of the twentieth century. Place an order for Hovhaness’ Magnificat or one of his 22 symphonies available from our rental library before January 31, 2013 to secure the specially reduced rate of $250 on any future performance at any time by absolutely any performing group.
Alan Hovhaness was an expert on Indian, Javanese, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Greek and Armenian classical and folk music, a neo-Romantic well-versed in Renaissance and Baroque counterpoint, a fiercely modern thinker who made great contributions to the development of aleatoric techniques in art music and one of the most accomplished American sacred music composers of his time. He is also perhaps the most prolific American composer—the scope of his catalogue is as tremendous as his base of musical influences. Though often dismissed as a marginal figure by musicologists because of his disinterest in atonal composition, Hovhaness is a true pioneer among the American modernists and one of the great mavericks of art music in the twentieth century. By discounting fees for titles in the Hovhaness rental catalogue, Peters New York hopes to encourage ensembles to consider programming a work that they might have otherwise overlooked—to reconsider this exciting and boundless body of work more earnestly.
