Roger Reynolds and Mode Records have released a special two-disc DVD set chronicling Reynolds’ innovative project for percussion ensemble, Sanctuary. Originally premiered in 2007, Sanctuary is a three-movement piece written for Steven Schick and red fish blue fish that embraces the theatricality of percussion performance. In order to fully capture the dynamic and malleable nature of the work, the discs include three performances in three different contexts. The first is a rigorously controlled studio performance during which the angle and motion of each camera was carefully charted in accordance with the musical score to create a unique viewing experience. The set also features the complete live recording of a concert at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC and excerpts from an outdoor performance at the Salk Institute in La Jolla, CA accompanied by commentary from Reynolds. In addition to these performances of Sanctuary the discs also contain a documentary on the composer entitled Finding Sanctuary.
