Mary Lloyd-Butler (b.1954) is a New York City-based composer. She received her undergraduate degree in music from the University of California at Santa Barbara and her Master of Fine Arts degree from the Graduate Musical Theater Writing Program at New York University, where she was a Jan Peerce Fellow. Her compositions range from vocal and instrumental works to musical theatre. She has written countless instrumental arrangements for her students at the Berkeley Carroll School in Brooklyn, New York (where she taught from 1993-2002); three of which (Amazing Grace, Greensleeves, and Silent Night, all scored for Violin/Flute and Piano) have been published by C. F. Peters Corporation. Her output includes many original instrumental compositions as well. Her Woodwind Quintet, Wind-born premiered in Woodstock, New York in the Fall of 2004 and was performed at the Local Produce Festival in Brooklyn in the Spring of 2005. Other instrumental compositions include: Prayer for Peace, A Meditation on 9/11 for Chamber Orchestra; Jill’s Journey, written for string orchestra, guitar, and flute; Myth Music, A Collection of Contemporary Two and Three Part Songs based on Greek Myths for Soprano Recorders and Piano; and Trio for Soprano, Clarinet, and Piano, which was performed on a series of concerts in New Jersey honoring women composers. Her choral arrangement of The Water is Wide has been widely performed and recorded.
Mary’s one-act musical The Happiness of Fish, (Mindi Dickstein, Lyricist), has been produced twice at the Bridewell Theatre in London in 2002 and 2003, and was part of the New American Voices concert in Lewes, Delaware during the Summer of 2004. Mary was awarded a month-long residency at the Millay Colony in 2007. More recently, Mary's work has been performed at the Philly Fringe Festival (Mr. Squee-kee's Super-Ultra-Clean Laundromat of Waking Dreams, September 2010 - Katherine Clark Gray, Lyricist;) and Brooklyn Reading Works (selections from Hide and Seek, October 2010). Mary has participated in the Composer/Lyricist Studio at New Dramatists with Ben Krywiez and in Raw Impressions Musical Theatre (Decades, La Ronde).
Mary is currently working on Hide and Seek, a musical theatre piece for which she is writing both music and lyrics.
